Leipzig, 07.10.2021. ALVARA | Digital Solutions offers a sustainable and smart alternative to printed paper receipts with the eBon. Since January 1, 2020, according to the Cash Register Act, the obligation to issue receipts is required even for the smallest amounts, the leading European provider of Track & Trace software solutions has been able to digitally create more than 118 million receipts with this service. In addition to retail and the environment, customers also benefit from the intuitive application.
With the so-called receipt obligation, a cash register receipt must be printed on paper or digitally created for each transaction since the beginning of 2020, regardless of whether the customer wants a receipt or not. As less than three percent of customers want a receipt when purchasing snacks, magazines, and tobacco products or in bakeries, the receipts almost always end up unread in the paper waste. However, due to the thermal paper used and the toxins contained, they don't belong there – they must be disposed of in the residual waste bin.
“According to our experience, the demand for receipt rolls increases 33-fold per cash register per month due to printed receipts. The additional costs for this could amount to up to 1000 euros per branch per year. Especially for small and medium-sized businesses, this is a significant cost factor,” explains ALVARA | Digital Solutions managing director Steven Schwarznau. “And: Sustainability definitely works differently. With the digital receipt, or eBon, we create a smart and also climate-positive alternative and tackle the paper flood.”
With the service, customers receive their receipt electronically, including the store logo, tax-related information, but without personal data. The only requirement for use is an active internet connection of the cash register. For the customer, three possible ways of use make the service particularly accessible. “Modern smartphones simply scan the corresponding QR code with the camera. For older models, any app for reading QR codes can be used. Or customers use the intuitively operable 'bon-online.de' app,” explains Steven Schwarznau. Users are automatically redirected to the eBon and can save it on their smartphone.
In addition to the massive saving of thermal paper, the advantages in the area of data protection are also obvious: When making a purchase on a cash register with the ITR cash register software from ALVARA | Digital Solutions, it's guaranteed that no data of the buyer is transmitted. When purchasing via debit or credit card, a receipt can either be printed, or the register blanks out personal information before transmission. “The receipts are also only available as an image and are therefore considered non-evaluable data,” says Steven Schwarznau. The information is also only available for 30 days, after which it is deleted and only stored on the buyer's smartphone. “Over 1,340 cash registers already use the eBon service today. Thanks to the development of drivers for various cash register systems, this is also possible regardless of the software used. Thus, 35,400 kilometers of toxic receipt paper have already been saved through the eBon service,” summarizes Steven Schwarznau.
